Dans ce récit, le poète du Grand Jeu embarque le lecteur dans un voyage initiatique vers le Mont Analogue, mystérieux et invisible sommet, objet de tous les fantasmes. Pierre Sogol, curieux monsieur, convainc le narrateur de l'accompagner dans une quête qui les conduira à traverser le Pacifique, avant d'accoster à l'énigmatique Port-des-Singes.
Ils entreprendront de gravir le Mont, sans atteindre le sommet : Daumal mourra avant d'avoir terminé son récit. Mythique, inaccessible, le Mont Analogue demeurera un mystère pour l'auteur et ses lecteurs. Horizon lointain et pénétrant, le Mont, par sa puissance allégorique, fascinera plusieurs générations d'artistes et inspirera à Jodorowski sa Montagne sacrée. Entre 1922 et 1925, René Daumal (1908-1944) est élève au lycée de Reims, où il fait la connaissance de Roger Gilbert-Lecomte, Robert Meyrat et Roger Vaillant.
Il se lance dans l'étude du sanskrit et multiplie les expériences sur l'état de la conscience dans les phases de sommeil. Avec ses camarades, il fonde en 1928 une revue : Le Grand Jeu. Après la publication d'une recueil de poèmes Contre-ciel (1935) puis de La Grande Beuverie (1939), il se lance dans la traduction de textes hindous.
